QA50: When should my child start seeing a dentist?

Ideally your child should start seeing a dentist when they start having teeth, which is usually at about 6 months. Unfortunately, most family dentists do not have the ability to see young children since their schedules are so full with older children and adults. However, if your dentist is able to start seeing your child at this young age, by all means start taking them to your dentist every 6 months. Since most people cannot get their children in to the dentist at this age, we will happily provide prescriptions for flouride and advise you on tooth brushing. – Steve Mendes, MD, MPH
