QA44: Why do you sometimes call and ask to speak to my teenager instead of speaking to me?

We feel that it is important for your teenager to feel comfortable discussing all of their health issues with us. We believe that the best way to promote their comfort and confidence in us is to provide them with confidentiality. We are happy to discuss these health issues with you as well, if we have your teen’s consent. You must always trust us that we will take the information we obtain from your teen and act appropriately if there is anyone who is in any danger. We also find that by calling and speaking with your teenage child on the phone, we promote their own self-esteem and ownership of their own health, and that we are teaching them some of the basics of navigating our very complicated health care system. – Sharon Keating, PNP and Steve Mendes, MD
