QA38: My 5 year old child is constipated. How can I help?

Constipation is very common in childhood. The best treatment involves prevention. Encourage a high fiber diet (a good rule for figuring out how many grams of fiber is: age of the child in years plus 5) as well as lots of water. Frequent exercise is also advised. Busy children need bathroom time scheduled into their day. OTC laxatives such as Miralax can help a child that has gone 3 days or longer without a bowel movement. Schedule an appointment to come see one of us in the office if your child is having any stooling problems. – by Bob Ledwith, PA and Steve Mendes, MD
