QA37: My teenage son recently suffered a concussion. When can he return to play?

Anyone that receives a concussion, whether sports related or otherwise, needs to be evaluated by a health care provider. Typically, if there have been no neurological symptoms in >48 hrs and a complete neurological evaluation reveals no abnormalities, a 5 day, stepwise return to sports can begin. In some cases those with repeated concussions will have a longer rest period or be kept out of contact sports for the rest of the season. Concussions can be very serious and can sometimes take a very long recovery time. It is very important to know that a second blow to the head can be extremely dangerous, resulting in Second Impact Syndrome.
