QA36: My child has been on an antibiotic and is still having a fever. Why?

Your child was likely placed on an antibiotic due to a bacterial infection. If your child’s fever persists after 72 hrs of antibiotic use it may be a sign the medication is not working and a change to a broader spectrum antibiotic may be indicated. If, however, your child has a viral infection, the antibiotic will have no affect on their illness, their immune system will fight off the infection. In either case, all children with fevers that last for more than 72 hrs after starting an antibiotic should come back for a re-assessment. – by Bob Ledwith, PA
