QA34: Can I use bug spray? What kind? How much DEET? On what age children?

Insect repellant (bug spray) should not be used on children under 2 months of age. Only apply bug spray on exposed intact skin or the outside of your child?s clothing. Be careful not to get it in your child?s eyes or mouth. For infants, putting it on their hands means that eventually it will be in their mouths. No more than 30% DEET should be used. Avoid using sunscreens that contain bug spray because the frequent reapplication of this sunscreen can overexpose your child to DEET. – by Kathleen Carr, PNP
