QA31: : How old should my baby be before we pierce his (or her) ears? (2-4 years old)

Ear piercing can be done as young as 2 months of age, however it is recommended that you wait to have your child?s ears pierced until they are old enough to take care of the piercings themselves. The ears should be cleaned with rubbing alcohol and an antibiotic ointment applied twice a day for a few days after the piercing. If the site looks red or is tender, seek medical attention to rule out an infection. In addition, although many people pierce young children’s ears during infancy, we worry about infants choking on the earrings when they start playing with their ears around 9 months old. – Kathleen Carr, PNP, and Steve Mendes, MD
