QA28: My child has tubes in his ears. Can he go under water?

There are differing opinions from ENT specialists on this question. Generally ENT specialists recommend protecting the ears from water if tubes are present. Some feel it is okay if the ears get wet but not okay if the child goes under the water. Water protection can be obtained using ear plugs or special headbands. You should consult with the doctor who placed the tubes to see what he/she specifically recommends. – Libby Coughlin, FNP
